Wow, all of a sudden $2 for a ringtone doesn't sound like so much money! If I figure my hourly rate it would seem that there is no way I could ever create my own ringtones fast enough to break even.
1.0.2 wasn't so bad rolling your own ringtones but 1.1.1 is sucky. This feels a whole lot like doing your own oil changes.

I have a jailbroken 1.1.1 as well. What folder did you put your stuff in, and did you have to make any changes to get it to work? Mine won't show up.

Well i am at work so i just looked over the process... just curious... wouldnt that itunes_control folder not be there on a jailbroken iphone? Where would you put those files after that folder isnt there... i just looked it over last night and i dont really remember if i saw it there or not. Ok, I found for mine to have multiple tones, I had to create multiple spoof files, one for each ringtone. I also used WinSCP to move my files to the phone and set all permissions at 755. It's a pain I'll admit, and a seperate guide (which I will try to write) for simplifying the plist editing would be sooooo nice. It's really not that bad though. Give me some time and I'll try to compile a guide for the editing.

Awesome!
Works great. Thank you for figuring this out.
For those of you who have broken out of jail, the folder you want is
/var/root/Media/iTunes_Control/Ringtones .

I get the following so something is wrong:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
"http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Ringtones</key>
<dict>
<key>Custard Pie_Ringtone.m4a</key>
<dict>
<key>GUID</key>
<string>Custard Pie_Ringtone.m4a</string>
<key>Name</key>
<string>Custard Pie_Ringtone</string>
</dict>
</dict>
</dict>
</plist>

My guide worked in my initial tests, but it's crapping out though on more than a few ringers. =( I'm pretty sure it's all to do with the .plist file, but I'm not sure enough of what I'm doing to leave my bad advice up.

note that I think your .m4a file name cannot have spaces in it.
