3G 2.0 Firmware install on 2G iphone?

Do you guys think it is possible to install the 2.0 firmware file that is used on the iphones 3G onto a first gen iphone?
Because where I live, the iphones 3G are unlocked when you buy them in the stores. So if this would be possible, there is no need in unlocking the iphone anymore...

Retarded question. The iPhones are unlocked via iTunes, not by firmware.

Before you call me retarded, you might want to come to Belgium then.
If you buy an iphone 3G here, it comes unlocked OTB. My friend bought one yesterday. So I guess it's not such a retarded question "Prince Marco"

Heres a thought, maybe risky, but could work. Again, im not responsible if anything happen.

I know ZiPhone has a option to change iphone IMEI. Change your 1st gen iPhone (4gb) with the same IMEI of the unlocked 3G iphone. then sync with iTunes. It could either unlock your 1st gen iPhone permanently or it could brick your 1st gen iphone permanently!

If you success, please report.. Good luck!

I dont think youd even make it that far. ITunes when trying to load the firmware file should immediately reject the old iPhone because its missing he correct hardware(cough 3G! cough cough)

Oh Dear !!!

Millions of user have this question who have 1st Gen or 2nd Gen phone which were bought Unlocked. These phones were taken out of the Box, Unlocked using various Unlocking Softwares and repacked. Apple doesn't sell unlocked phones anywhere in the world. They are always locked to a service provider. Initially when it was not available in the most of the Asian-European countries, this unlocking process was carried out in Hongkong-China-Singapore etc and smuggled to all of the Asian/European countries. These phones will get locked everytime you upgrade your firmware and you need to unlock them. Currently there's Unlock available for versions up to 1.1.4. If you upgrade to version 2 it will get locked again and you will not be able to unlock it...at least in near future. Downgrading it is also quite difficult at present. So no upgrade till an unlock is released...I am sure your friend who bought it unlocked will not be having Firmware 2 on his phone.
One more point... someone mentioned above that it will not upgrade because it does not have 3G chip. This is wrong. So many valid user of AT&T have upgraded their 1.1.4 to 2.
I too bought a 1.0.2 unlocked out of the box almost a year back. It did get locked everytime I upgraded and I unlocked it. I upgraded to 2 as well and had to downgrade back to 1.1.4. I know what a pain it is and will never suggest anyone to do this untill an easy Unlock for 2 is available.

Apple unlocks their iPhones via iTunes with encryption to and from its servers allowing it to scan the IMEI number and validate it as an unlocked iPhone. You cannot install a 2.0 firmware from an unlocked iPhone to a locked iPhone and hope it unlocks it. Doesnt work that way.

Just for sh*ts and grins. Try it. If not, I would try it, but phones here in the United States are locked. I have a new 3G iphone and a previous generation 4GB iphone.

there was a time europe selling 1st gen iphone unlocked by itunes. If itunes pick up your 1st gen iphone with the unlocked IMEI of ur 3g iphone, then it will load the compatible unlocked firmware for your first gen iphone. Again, just a thought! Not guarantee

now i have sucessfully installed 3g firmware, onto old 2g phone.
now can anyone confirm if it will become 3g enabled?
i dont have a 3g sim to test it.
but the phone is working fine.
it had to activated through itunes, which has gone ok.

or

is 3g something not in the firmware, and to do with the chipset?

the edge icon is showing, and no 3g icon.

i am using a 02 sim in it

my friend, although i did install 3g firmware sucessfully onto 2g iphone,it did not become 3g,the reason for this is the 3g iphone has a infineon chip, that enables you to use 3g,so it wont work!
