Can't get into DFU mode

My 2G iphone is stuck on the apple screen. I can hold the power and home buttons down to restart and turn it off. I can also get it into recovery mode. But itunes won't restore from restore mode because it says I iTunes can't connect to the software update server (I think its my work firewall - issue is I need my phone!!)

How can I get it into DFU mode as the only instructions I can find are if the phone is on - if I hold the power button and home button down when the phone is off the apple logo appears before I've counted to ten.

Whats the best way to get into DFU from the point the phone is stuck on the apple logo?

Much appreciated.

Heya,

Have you tried Ziphone? It can set your iphone into DFU mode by one click.
A very detailed instruction on how to get into DFU mode manually is here: http://www.modmyi.com/forums/1976661-post2.html
It's good to hear I'm not the only one who can't connect to the apple update servers. But I never checked the firewall, maybe that'll help.

Alex.

If you're having trouble contacting their server, you could download the firmware yourself (Google helps) and when you restore, shift + click restore and find the firmware you downloaded and you should be good.

No, I can't. There's no form or something where I can enter that. I plug my iPod in and set it into DFU mode and the first thing I get is that server error.

What do you mean there's "no form" to do such a thing? If it's a firewall issue, turn it off or download it from another source!

I turned it off. But it's still not working.

With "no form" I ment that there's no screen where I can choose what I'd like to do. iTunes just shows some progress bars sayin' "waiting for the ipod" and then it tells me that server thingy.

Are you on a Windows machine or Mac? If you're on a Mac, it's option + click; there's no reason that a window wouldn't pop up allowing you to select the firmware you want.

I'm on a Win Xp box. I don't get that screen where I can choose 'restore' and 'update' and all the other infos about my iPod.

As said, I plug in my iPod. Turn it into dfu mode and then that message pops up - no other screens or messages.

Hopefully I can fix that issue soon. School starts tomorrow and I need my iPod.

Odd, you should be able to click buttons to select what you want, even with recovery mode (have tried). Are you sure you're in DFU mode (screen is black)? Have you reinstalled iTunes? The fact that it's bypassing the device info screen isn't normal.

Well, my iPods screen is black all the time. When I (try to) enter the DFU mode the screen turns white for a second or so.

And iTunes says "Waiting for iPod" and a progress bar is shown. And then that server message pops up.

I have no chance to select what I want to do - No iPod info screen nor it's shown on the iTunes navbar on the left.

Do you have any idea?

Alex.

That would seem as a problem with iTunes, as your computer sees it (otherwise it wouldn't start the process). Like I said before, try reinstalling iTunes. I haven't a clue why it goes into recovering automatically (try looking in the options for something related, perhaps automatic syncing), so it looks like this may be a problem with your iTunes program.
